Rosas, who plays guitar and mandolin, had his own group, and Lozano launched a power trio. Hidalgo, the band’s lead vocalist/guitarist (whose arsenal includes accordion, percussion, bass, keyboards, melodic, drums, violin and banjo) met Perez at Garfield High in East LA and started a garage band. Most fans know the group came together from three separate units. Los Lobos, after all, means The Wolves in Spanish. neighborhood legends, Sunset Strip regulars and a Grammy Award winning band (Best Mexican-American/Tejano Music Performance) by the time they recorded their major label debut How Will The Wolf Survive? in 1984.Īlthough the album’s name and title song were inspired by a National Geographic article about wolves in the wild, the band- David Hidalgo, Louie Perez, Cesar Rosas, Conrad Lozano and Steve Berlin-saw parallels with their struggle to gain mainstream rock success while maintaining their Mexican roots. ![]() Since then they’ve repeatedly disproven that title. More than four decades have passed since Los Lobos released their debut album, Just Another Band from East L.A. May the line form again on Sat, April 2, when the two groups join up for their return concert/show at Harrah’s Laughlin. Sure they have love songs in the mix, but their subject matter is indicative of their belief systems and their faith.Īnd to be able to catch the shredding of guitars by David Hidalgo of Los Lobos and Henry Garza of Los Lonely Boys was worth standing in the longest line many of us had experienced in Laughlin. One thing both groups have in common, they’ve never forgotten where they came from, creating songs of substance and sustenance. Los Lonely Boys are brothers by blood-Los Lobos are brothers by choice. Anyone who was lucky enough to witness the musical force that was in evidence at the show Los Lobos and Los Lonely Boys put on when they were last at Harrah’s Laughlin’s Rio Vista Outdoor Amphitheater saw the effect the combined power of two explosively talented bands of brothers had on a crowd that couldn’t get enough.
